When I think of Bak Prea, our 2021 staff outing immediately comes to mind. We travelled by boat from Battambang to Siem Reap, passing through breathtaking scenery—mangrove forests and floating villages. One of these villages was Bak Prea, where we stopped for lunch and spoke with some of the local residents. Vanna and I both felt strongly that this was a place we would like to work in one day.
Two years later, we met Thida, who applied to volunteer with us on her own initiative. After a few conversations, it became clear to our team that she would be a wonderful addition to the Living Team. We offered her a traineeship, and in June 2024, we were proud to promote her to Living Program Manager. Since Thida herself grew up in Bak Prea—and the village holds a special place in her heart—our team travelled there for the first time in July 2024. The goal was to introduce our work and offer high school students in Bak Prea the opportunity to apply for the Living Program.
It brings me so much joy to see how God continues to guide us—showing us what’s needed and where we’re meant to be. I hope you enjoy reading the stories of our students from Bak Prea.
There will also be Cambodian products available for purchase during the events. This year, our team has created something particularly special: we developed our own version of a well-known board game and produced it right here on our campus. Students, trainees, short-term volunteers, and staff all contributed to its creation. The result is both delightful and meaningful—every purchase directly supports the ongoing work of Lighthouse Battambang.
Stay tuned for more in the next newsletter. Prepare to be surprised!
